Reactions on Love Is A Fallacy

Love is Fallacy was written by Max Schulman. It in the first person state because he is the one who is talking and narrating the story. It is about a young boy, so much in love with a not so intelligent girl. One day his friend asked him a raccoon coat. He said he would give him the coat when he, himself will go with his friend’s girl. His friend said yes. After so many nights of dating and teaching the girl some fallacies, the girls become so intelligent. The man said that she is fit to be his girl. And then one night, he said all her feelings to the girl. That he love her and asked if she want to be his girl. But the girl said no because she is dating with his friend. Then he asked why she was dating him when he is the one who thought him so many fallacies and make him an intelligent girl. Then she answered, “He’s got a raccoon coat.”

We are to make a reaction about this story. At first reading the story Love is a Fallacy, I myself really was confused about this. How the story did again went? What are the traits they possess? These were just some of the questions that I asked myself when I was reading this. But after so many times of reading, fortunately, I understand a little. And I can make a good (it’s not very good) reaction about this story.

The beginning of the story was about him, discussing himself as a good student. I myself can say that there are no traits that he discussed as a negative trait. He only discuss about his good traits. And that mean even if you only read this part, you can say that the story teller is a person only loving him. They describe others by giving bad comments to them.

They made a promise to each other that if he will give the raccoon coat, he will surrender his girl to him. This also was being done by the other. But the only thing that is still in my mind, why are they following the girl even if she is a not so intelligent girl. I read that she is beautiful gal but what is beauty when the brain is empty. Well if they like that go on. But me, when I am choosing the right guy for me, even if he is not a not so good looking guy (but not that whom looks like monster), if he had the brains and he is kind, why not?

It was also in the story that the man, which was the story teller, taught the dumb girl some fallacies to be known by her. He taught her so many nights when they are dating. And also the girl learned these fallacies. But when it was the time when the guy will going to tell his feeling to the girl, the girl insisted the offer because she was dating his friend. It only means that the girl does not have “utang ng loob” as what in the Filipino dialect is. It is said that she become intelligent because of the storyteller but she did not even give the guy anything. Well when he said that she cannot date him, it is not that she is going to choose that guy but in the story she even did not said thanks to him. And that means she is not a type of girl who is giving back what the others gave her.

If I am going to rate this story, Love is Fallacy from 1-10 as 10 as the highest, I would rate it as 7. Why? It is because the story sometimes is confusing and a bit long. But it also gave some
meaningful meanings. Based on my readings, the over-all message of the story is about friendship, love and not breaking promises. Friendship because it is about two friends being involve with this girl, and because of this girl, they will have to prove how long will be there friendship. Love also because it is about a guy sacrificing all his knowledge to the girl just to make her love him. And the most important in this story is not breaking promises. It is because his friend broke the promise that he will surrender his girl to him. I learned in this story that no matter how hard it is, “Do not break Promises”.
